A preliminary design for an empty nester’s home in North Bend, Washington, on a site with multiple environmentally critical areas, mature Douglas Fir trees, and almost no direct sunlight. The brief required a quiet space for respite from weekly obligations, and also a studio for creating art. The bridge separating the programs leverages the changes in the topography and offers an area to display select works. This design ensures that the proposed structure touches the ground lightly.
